Liberty District Day Two – Statesmen Report

Veteran collect another crown and the future shine through

--Johnson wins 300m dash, Herbolsheimer and Dickson qualifies for Regional championship

For four years, Senior Brittany Johnson has made a name for herself by feasting on Liberty District opponents on the track and most importantly in the field. This year’s championship was no exception as Johnson continued her dominance from the first day by collecting the one crown missing from indoor her District individual resume. From her freshman year as a member of the championship winning team title, Johnson has collected at least one title at the indoor championship. Sophomore year she collected the 55m dash title (the win was the 5^th straight a Statesmen has won the event), junior year saw her take three (3) titles in the field (Long, Triple and High Jump) and this year added the long jump and on day two the 300m dash title. Johnson concluded a wonderful indoor career in which she won at least one crown in all individual event she competed in over her four years – 55m dash (2008, 2010), 300m dash (2010), Long Jump (2009, 2010), Triple Jump (2009), High Jump (2009). All together the final District Indoor Championship Individual medal tally is fifteen (15) – 7 gold, 3 silver, 3 Bronze, 1 Fourth place and 1 Fifth place.

Senior Andrew Dickson waited four seasons to finally be able to compete at the Liberty District Indoor Championship and he fulfilled one goal of advancing to the regional championship when he led off the Boy’s 4x800m relay team to the regional berth. However, Dickson also had aspiration of obtaining the right to compete in an individual event. Competing in two events on the second day of the championship increased his chances double folds. The 1600m run was the first event and he ran with the leaders for the entire race only to just miss out by one spot for to advance. Dickson’s 2^nd event would pan out the same way as the leaders ran together for the entire race and it looks like the dream was going to die in the same way as the pervious event. As the leaders including Dickson ran for the tape, no one knew who would advance as the 5^th and 6^th runners had to wait for the photo and results from the pervious heat to find out their fate. As it was turn out Dickson was destine as he won the 5^th place in the fast section beat out the pervious heat winner and advances to his first and final indoor regional championship.

Junior Courtney Herbolsheimer kept one streak intact and another one ended. Competing in two more races to complete her Liberty Championship schedule, Herbolsheimer in her first race of the day, the 1600m run continued her streak of medaling in all her finals with a 5^th place. However, all good things but come to an end and in the final event, the 1000m run, even with a super heroic hard fought effort after a long championship schedule, the streak just didn’t survive as Herbolsheimer finished 8^th in the event.

As senior Johnson was closing out her final season, the future champions emerged led by Liberty District 55m hurdle runner freshman Alexandra Sandlin and fellow freshman Madeline Lewsen (8^th – HJ & 9^th – TJ) who qualifier for the regional championship in the same event. The final event provided a glimpse into the future as Sandlin and Lewsen joined with two more freshman Jocelyn Golden (13^th – 300m) and Claudia Castaneda (12^th – 300m & 14^th – 55m) to run the Girl’s 4x400m where they placed 6^th and collected one championship point. Two other freshmen Katrina McLeod (12^th) and Gelare Ghajar-Rahimi (15^th) competed and recorded personal best in the 500m dash. The future looks bright with 32 members of the team who completed the season being freshman and 11 of them taking part in the District Championship.

The team will next compete at the Northern Virginia Regional Championship at George Mason University, Saturday, February 20^th, 2010 starting @ 8:30AM.

Liberty District Day One – Statesmen Report

Seniors Brittany Johnson and Meara Goss continue dominances

**Johnson win Long Jump and 55m and Goss wins Shot put District crown

When its comes to the Liberty District Indoor championship in the last eight (8) years, one thing you can take to the bank and guarantee that the teller will cash you out, Marshall is going to win either the 55m dash or the shot put title. For the last eight years, the teller/cashier would have had to pay double every time. This year it was no different as Senior's, Brittany Johnson and Meara Goss, pulled off the double in dominating fashion. Like she has done for the last three years under the guidance of current boy’s shot put District championship record holder, Coach Jose Portillo, Goss left no doubt who is the best in the business in her event as she claimed her third straight District Shot title in as many seasons. Goss saved her most dominant performances for her last crown, pushing her winning margin to four (4) feet over the nearest competitor. Her last two crowns came with her winning by over three feet. With this win – Goss brings her career District titles to six (6) and District medals to eight (8).

To say Senior Brittany Johnson’s running style is complex or untraditional is not giving her enough credit. But what you can say about her is she just has a knock for stepping up at the District championships. Ever since her freshman year as a member of the winning District championship team – Johnson has been collecting crowns. As a sophomore she won the 55m dash title to make it five straight for the Statesmen. Under the guidance of Coach Theodore “Teddy” Robinson, as a junior Johnson dominated the jumps – taking all three crowns – long, high, and triple jumps. This year, Johnson was looking to leave the same way she came into the championship – with crowns in tow. The long jump title was bagged on the first jump of the competition as she would be the only one to jump – 16 feet in the event.

The 55m dash – which everyone has gone to the bank with – figured to not be as easy with her nearest competitor standing only 0.09 coming into the meet. After the first round, the Fairfax runner looked poised to spoil the party with a new personal best. However, champions never quit, champions never give up, champions know how to be champions and Johnson is a champion. Knowing she needed a good start, as Coach Steven Friend has been work and emphasizing all season, Johnson settled into the blocks, set, and the gun sounded and the 55m dash crown was returned to its rightful place after a one year hiatus. With the best start out of the blocks in her career, Johnson won her 2^nd 55m dash crown, tied the number two rank in school history, automatically qualified for the state championship, earned her sixth (6) indoor District title and eleventh (11) District individual medal.

Like the 55m and shot put, Marshall has a rich tradition with the hurdles as Melanie Burgess (C’96) still holds the District meet record in the 55m and 55mH. Last year under the coaching of new Coach Mindy Harman, Statesmen saw a spectacular return in the hurdling as Nicole Brown (C’09) and Aaron Anderson (C’09) qualified for the State championships. Brown was the District runner up and Anderson went on to break the school record in the 55m hurdles. This year the challenge would seem harder but new year brought hope as freshman, Alexandra Sandlin, broke the 10 second mark at the Montgomery Invitational and came into the championships ranked 3^rdin the 55m hurdles. Luck of the draw would have it, Sandlin would be paired with her teammate and fellow freshman, Madeline Lewsen, in the first round of the meet. A great start by Lewsen would push the pair to new personal bests with Sandlin winning heat and both dipping under 10 seconds and into the finals. Loving the great start by Lewsen, Sandlin made some adjustments to better her start for the finals. Sandlin's start could not have been better as she dominated the field out of the blocks and led the race for four hurdles, eventually giving way to the senior from Mclean to take the silver medal. Lewsen would produce another personal best to take the 6^th and final spot to the regional championships.

One thing you can expect from a Coach Darrell General team, nobody will ever out work them. There was an uncertainty of what or how this year’s team will pan out but uncertainties started turning into higher hope when the boy’s 4x8 team dipped under nine (9) minutes the final meet before District and came into the championship five (5) seconds out of the second spot to the regional championship. Returning to Coach General’s home turf (he lived 2 minutes away from the meet site) and allowed to finally lace up the spikes – the boy’s team were on a mission (per their marching order from the General). Senior, Andrew Dickson, set back for nearly four years by injuries has come a long way to finally competing during the indoor season and he made sure it counted. He led the team off and ran with the lead all the way to put the team in the hunt. Junior Alexander “AJ” Norton, produced one of his strongest and grittiest performances to keep the team rolling toward their goal. Junior, Gabriel Ritter, was the only one on the team who had a chance to run at this venue this season, so he was familiar with the surface and it was practice as he kept the team right on target. Only thing standing between the team and a regional qualifier was the powerhouse distance group from Jefferson but we had a speedy Sophomore, Saweel Ahmed, who didn’t know or care about their tradition. Ahmed ran with the anchor leg from Jefferson for seven (7) hundred meters and then told him see you at the finish line as he turned on the jet for the final 100m sprint home and secured the Statesmen surprising and well earned place to the Regional championships.

Sometimes junior, Courtney Herbolsheimer, consistency can be her worst enemy when it comes to the spotlight. It does help that she competes against some of the strongest distance regional teams in the country in Jefferson and Langley. However, Herbolsheimer can stand up and say she has competed against the best and came out victorious. Leading up to this meet Herbolsheimer has medaled in every event she has contested in the District championships. This year was going to be no different as Herbolsheimer again medaled this time in the 3200m run to book her place to another regional championship and go 5 of 5.

Senior, Steven Savage, is unlike the traditional Statesmen thrower. Most of the previous Statesmen were offensive linemen, like his current Coach Jose Portillo who started for Temple University and Marshall High School. Savage was a linebacker and kick returner who no one would mistake for a shot putter. But, Statesmen tradition and pride cannot be underestimated and Savage wanted his name to be mentioned. Coming into the meet, Savage was ranked 5^th and in the perfect position to qualify for the regional championships. After getting a nice warm up in the 55m dash (he finished 10^th), Savage would let it lose and would accomplish his first 40 feet throw. This moved him up one spot from his seed mark and booked his ticket to the regional championships.

Overall the girl’s team sits in 2^nd place after the first day with 45 points and the boy’s team is in 7^th place with 10 points. There were sixteen (16) personal bests achieved but the most respectable performance was by the girl’s 4x800m relay team. The team of freshman, Kimberly Gollogly, freshman Gelare Ghajar-Rahimi, junior Negeen Kianersi and sophomore Ashley Coates were asked to compete in the event after training as sprinters for the whole season. They were perfect teammates and did whatever the coaches and team required of them. So, to them – I say “Nuff Respect”.

The District Championships will conclude next week on Thursday, February 4^th, 2010 at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Maryland @ 4:30pm.
