2023 Marshall HS Spring Track & Field Challenge
Marshall T&F - Regional Championship Summary - Spoden & Oliver wins Regional Crown
Regional Championship Summary
When you have the heart of a champion nothing can stop you from achieving greatness - Senior Haley Spoden and Seth Oliver
are the true definition of champions who will not be denied greatness.
Like in the spring of last year, Spoden jumped into the 3200m for fun and when it was over - she was the Northern Regional
champion in the event. This year it was repeated as she lead wire to wire to claim the title in a new personal best and state
qualifier.
Oliver started off the season winning the 3200m and would go undefeated the rest of the season including winning the Liberty
District title in runway fashion. The regional championship race was not going to be another running away with a quality
field. Running with the top 3 for most of the race and going into the final lap - the Yorktown running threatened to end his
streak. However, with 100 meters to go, Seth saw daylight and decide today wasn't the day he was going to lose. Letting
off a final big kick, Oliver would catch the Yorktown runner at the line and keep his streak intact.
Senior Sean Sanders only had one record left to chase and this meet would be his best shot to get it. The 1000m record
was tough because it is usually run after the 1600m run - but this time - Sanders would run it fresh, leading for most of
the race. The goal was right there to be achieved. With two laps to go he was joined by a runner by Oakton and the chase as
on, with a final push, Sanders had done it, broke the final indoor record he wanted to get. Now he is the owner of school
records in the 4x800m, 800m, 1000m, and 1600m to go along with his outdoors 4x800m and 1600m records. I'm sure he will be
going after the outdoor 800m records too in the spring.
Senior Alexander Oliver's hard work put him in place to have choices when it came to the regional championship - he could
run the 4x200m, 500m, 300m, and 4x400m. He anchored the 4x200m to an automatic qualifier in the first meet to the State championship
- so he didn't need to run that event, the 300m was going to be hard on a flat track and the 4x400m was at the end. But being
the leader that he is - AJ choose the harder event and decided to put his heart all into it. Running his fast section - he
found himself with the lead with a lap to go and still running smooth. He held his composure and finish strong to the line
and when it was over - he had run the 3rd fastest time in school history, better his personal best by over 1 second, and qualified
for the state championship.
Senior Christos Proctor seems to never have it easy and everything he wanted it required a fight and battle. He broke
the school record earlier in the 55m dash at his first meet at PG Sportplex and here was again need another performance closer
to that to qualify for the State championship. Qualification did not go as planned, Proctor came in the meet ranked 2nd and
was the last qualifier into the finals in 8th and forgotten man on the outside and nursed a little pain in his leg. Speaking
to the coach and his dad - all he was asked to was execute just once and then he can get rest and get healthy for the state
championship. Like a champion and Christos pushed out the blocks in the lonely outside lane and sped to the lead and kept
pushing when the results were posted he had taken 3rd and was close to his school record performance (6.70 to 6.67).
The 4x800m relay team easily won the District title and the only thing left for them to was secure their automatic qualifier
for the state championship but missed it by 0.12 (8:15.61 to 8:15.73). So, the mission was moved to the Regional championship
and the team was in the fight from start to finish. Seth Oliver lead off the season and put right in the thick of things,
the battle would continue with Senior Luke Hanzlik ran hard and kept the fight going, Senior Nawfal Elwannas kept the team
pushing and on target and Senior Sean Sanders would take to the anchor with the goal within reach. Sanders would close out
the relay and this time they better the qualifier by over 4 seconds for the State championship.
Junior Adrianna Haggerty Graham has been doing double duty as the manager on the 19 -3 men's basketball team while being
one of the best shot putters in the region. She lived up to the hype putting together a great series of throws to set a personal
best and placed her highest finish in the regional champ just missing the state champs by one spot.
Senior Graham Peterson, Veronica Curran, and Gavin Sandall probably competed in his last indoor meet as Statesmen - thank
you for your leadership, dedication, and commitment.
Congratulations to these athletes competing at the State Championship - on Feb. 24th and Feb. 25th in Virginia Beach,
VA. Only these athletes will continue to practice next week.

Statesmen in the running for Liberty District Championship title.
The 2022- 2023 Liberty District Championship will be held at Prince George's Sports and Learning complex along with the
Concorde District on Thursday, February 2nd, and Friday, February 3rd. Based on the seeding performances going into the meet,
the Marshall Statesmen is in the running along with Washington-Liberty HS to win the Boy's team title.
The Statemen will be led by a Quartet of Seniors mainly on the track in the distance and sprint discipline.
Senior Sean Sanders is ranked #1 in all three of his races with the fastest time in the 1600m and 1000m and is a member
of the 4x800m relay team. Fellow distance runner and Senior Seth Oliver is #1 in two (3200m, 4x800m) of three races with
2nd only to his teammate in the 1600m.
Senior Christos Proctor returns to the track where he set a school record in the 55m dash (6.67) and is ranked #2 in the
event and a member of the #1 ranked 4x200m school record team. Senior Alexander Oliver (not related to Seth) will look to
pull off another District title as he is entered in the 300m and 500m and 4x400m relay.
With all the action on the track, the title might actually come down to Senior Graham Peterson moving up in the Boy's
Shot put as Washington-Liberty currently outscoring the Statesmen 52 - 2 in the field events. It really going to take a team
effort to win the title, scoring one point here and another point there by athletes such as Senior Gavin Sandall (300m, 500m),
Junior Krish Bhalla (55m, 300m), Junior Simon Barnes (3200m) or Senior Nawfal Elwannas (1000m).
On the women's side, Senior Haley Spoden is posed to have a great championship to close out her District career with some
historical performances in the last few weeks. She had moved up the rankings in the 1600m, Mile, and 1000m and put the 4x800m
relay team to win the event. Freshman Samantha Dabich looking to be the next rising star based on her top 6 ranking in the
500m and 1000m and Sophomore Amelia Shoemaker has been tearing up the track in the last few weeks in the 3200m and 1600m.
Senior Veronica Curran is the hardest working woman on the team as she is entered in the long and Triple jump, 300m dash,
and potentially two relay team duties. Junior Allison Gardner is ranked #3 in the 55m dash and will run both the 4x200m and
4x400m.
In the girl's shot put - all three junior class ladies have the chance of making it to the regional championship led by
Adrianna Haggerty Graham, Jada Patrick (55m and 4x200), and Daniela Garcia Palencia.

Good Night Marshall, Spring Track and Field Family. Hope this message reaches you well and everyone had a great spring break.
Everyone wishing to compete on Tuesday, April 11th - need to be at practice on Monday, April 10th. Reminder - only coaches
can submit the entries for the meet to me (Head Coach Wong)
Reminder of the changes:
*Only your event coaches will be submitting entries for the meet to me. I will not be accepting any entries directly
from athletes anymore. Coaches will need to submit to me their attendance sheet with their entries.
*Coaches will be making their selections based on who are at practice before the deadlines. If, you are at practice for
any reason including excused absences - it will be the coach's decision if you can compete that week.
*I have modified the meet schedule to include when you need to have the online form completed before the entries are due
for the upcoming meets - April 15th - Bullis Meet is cancelled.
*If, you do not update the form - you will not be entered into the meet.
*The form below is for the rest of the season. So, everyone need to complete it again.
UPDATED!!! Spring T&F 2023 Meet Availability
*If, you are entered into the meet and you do not show up and compete - you automatically miss the next meet. If, you are
entered in a meet and tell me at last minute you cannot make the meet for schedule events such school events, vacations, or
planned activities - you will miss the next two meets.
*If, it is an emergency or something last minute and requires an athlete to miss meetings - the parents should be contacting
me. There are things adults (coaches and parents) can speak to that would shield the athletes from damaging relationship.
*I will do my best to publish entries in Schoology for the athletes to review, it is their responsibilities to review
the entries completely to ensure they are entered into the meet or should not be entered into the meet. Do not go by what
your friends and teammates tell you and read through the whole document - not just the parts you are interested in.
*The weekdays meets are a little bit more flexible but it still have restrictions. Weekend meets (Invitationals - have
deadlines from a week in advance to a month).
*Commitment for the championships needs to submit by May 5th - we will not ask if you are available, we require you to
be all in for all the District, Regional and State championships.

Good Night Marshall, Spring Track and Field Family. Hope this message reaches you well.
It has been a busy start of the season, and everyone was giving the opportunity to compete, in the next few week - we
will be competing at a few more competitive invitationals on the weekends. It will really help us prepare for the championship
season.
To prepare for the rest of the season, we are making a few changes to how entries are done and enforcing some team rules.
These changes are necessary to allow me to process the entries better and more efficiently for over 150 athletes. Last week
- it took me over 3 days to process entries for a meet - that is not effective and take away from me working on other items
for the team.
Here are the changes:
*Only your event coaches will be submitting entries for the meet to me. I will not be accepting any entries directly
from athletes anymore. Coaches will need to submit to me their attendance sheet with their entries.
*Coaches will be making their selections based on who are at practice before the deadlines. If, you are at practice for

Marshall Spring Track and Field - Update - 3/12/23
Good Night Everyone. Hope you had a great weekend. Thank you to
all the parents who came out to the Meet the Coaches Night, and everyone who
supported the team Night at Road Runners.
Congratulations to everyone
who competed at
New Balance National Championship in Boston – proud of all of you and thanks
for the great season.
Now that Indoor track and
field is complete –
the spring season competitions begin this Wednesday, March 15th at
Washington-Liberty HS with our first District Meet. As we mentioned in the Meet
the Coach Night –
the events will be split in half – so we have A & B meet each week. This
week – it is an A meet (see the attached format for the events – that will be
contested this week).
Everyone needs to fill out
this form to let us
know if you are available for the meet – this is the only way we will enter you
into the meet. Everyone is eligible to
compete all meets – we will select the event and if you will be allowed. We
will select for the meet based on
attendance, then the form – invitationals will be based on performance, and
then the form.
Here is the form - https://forms.office.com/r/F672Y29iud
Note – we have added
a Freshman/Sophomore meet
on May 25th – parents will have to get their athletes to the meet – there is no
bus.
April 15th and May 6th –
we have two meets on
those days. You will only get to attend one even if you select to – but you can
make a note at the bottom of your preference.
We will be issuing uniforms
for athletes who
are new to track and field everyone else should already have a uniform from the
previous season or winter track and field.
We will issue uniforms on Monday and Wednesday.
The weather is calling for
51 on Wednesday –
it will probably be in the 40s by the end of the meet and night. So, athletes
need to have warm clothing – I would recommend wearing long tights under your
uniform singlet and long tights for your bottom.
We need all athletes to bring
warm clothing
for practices every day – sweats pants, sweatshirts, long sleeves – you can
have shorts and a t-shirt under just in case the weather is better and you take
off your long clothing. Hats and gloves
should be in your bags. Everyone needs to bring their spikes to all practices.
If, we feel it is cold and athletes do not have warm clothing – we will send
them home and it will count as an unexcused absence. My rule – is better to
have it and don’t need it than need it and don’t have it.
The spirit pack online store
will be opening
this week – it will only be open for 7 to 10 days at max – so get in there and
order your items. Remember parents you
can order stuff for yourself too.
Once again, we are doing our
letter campaign –
we have to pay for all the invitational meets and we still need to purchase
hurdles, and blocks and add more uniforms.
So, please support the fundraiser – at a minimum please share it on your
social media and with your friends and family. Remember all funds donated to
the Boosters and school is 100% Tax Deductible.
Here is the link - https://org.eteamsponsor.com/ETS/supportUs/506520763
Thank you in advance.

Communication
We
have a very large team, so communication is very important There
are 3 primary ways I will communicate with the team. Team website – www.gcmtrackandfield.com Schoology Group - https://lms.fcps.edu/group/2923856607
(access code 73CW-HB83-DSDCV) - This is mainly for students. Twitter
- https://twitter.com/gcmtrack
My goal is to have a weekly
Sunday
message. You
can imagine – I’m sending lots of email – so sometimes yahoo will block it. Please
add headcoachwong@yahoo.com
to your contact If,
the message get blocked – I will post a pdf of the message on the website. This
message is only going to parents, you can share a copy with the athlete. There
will be a copy in Schoology too.
If, you not sure able any
team info –
you can always email, call or text me – anytime.
Practice
preparation I
do not cut athletes however missing practices is the main way to be off the
team – we take attendance daily. Very
important that the athletes are dress for the weather – March can be
unpredictable. Necessary
Hats, gloves, long pants,
long sleeves
shirts Sweatpants, sweat top/jacket Leggings, bring a winter coat – you can
use to stay warm between reps Layers might be needed especially
for
the 530pm practices If, we get lucky like we did last week
–
you can reduce your layers My rule is – better
to take off layers
than need it and don’t have it to put on. Anyone not dressed properly
might be
sent home – it is for their health and safety.
Drink
enough water - the body need to be
hydrated. Have snacks or food that you can eat
between lunch and practice time. If, the weather is so bad
– we will try
and find alternative small spaces indoors If, we cannot secure any
spaces indoors
– we will cancel practices via Twitter, website, Schoology and school
announcements.
Marshall Spring Track and Field - Update - 2/26/23
Hello All. Welcome to the 2nd week of spring track and field season.
I apologize to everyone still on the list - I will have a final list by next time and remove any parents whose student-athletes
are not doing spring track and field.
1. This week - we really will be getting more track and field training beginning with the time trials on Monday (27th
and 28th) at 3:15 PM. All athletes including shot putters will be taking the Time Trials. Distance athletes will take the
1600m and every one the 150m. Tuesday - we will do 800m and 300m - reminder everyone has to do at least one of the time trials
to be part of the team. If you have competition spikes - you can use them for the time trials. I will bring some in our storage
for others to borrow and use (get your own at team night on the 7th). Also, you can run in shorts for the time trials - you
still need your long stuff for your warm always (even if it is 90 degrees - at least for sprinters).
If you are not on the Activities compliance list - you will not be allowed to take the time trials. We have 2 days if
you miss Tuesday time trials - you will not be part of the spring track and field team this year. Athletes preparing for
New Balance Nationals are exempt from the time trials as they are preparing for the championship.
2. This week the Students have a 2-hour release on Thursday (3/2) and No school on Friday (3/3). Please pay attention
to the practice schedule on those days. My goal is to publish the practice schedule weekly - so the athletes know where to
be for practice. A complete practice schedule for this week is attached.
3. Time trials for sprinters will allow us to drive the largest group of athletes in better practice time. Afternoon
sprinters with Coach Cintorino (usually goes early right after and considered development athletes for training). Night Sprinters
with Coach Wong (are athletes who will be expected to be part of the championship team). That does not mean afternoon sprinters
will not be given the opportunity to earn a spot in the championship. For the time trials - to make the Night sprints - you
need to run sub (B) 19/22 (G) in the 150m and sub (B) 41/49 (G) in the 300m. The night sprints are optional but recommended
for a higher level of training but if athletes cannot make the practice time will be probably 530PM/6:00 PM on Mondays, Wednesdays,
and Thursdays. They can always go to Afternoon sprint practice.
4. Jumpers/Hurdlers are sprinters too - when they do not have practice - you are expected to attend sprint practices -
there is no event in track and field that does not requires movements including throwing.
5. Important Updates. Team Night is Tuesday, March 7th - not Tuesday, March 2nd as previously indicated. Please take
a look at the updated Spring Packet for some changes.
6. Important Dates

7. Communication is very important - I will only use this mailing list to send Sunday messages - please follow Twitter
- https://twitter.com/gcmtrack, and Schoology - https://lms.fcps.edu/group/2923856607 (Access Code 73CW-HB83-DSDCV), updates
